Knowing God

Is the Sabbath still meant to be kept today?

The Sabbath was established at creation for all humanity, kept by Jesus, and never revoked in Scripture — it remains a weekly gift of rest and worship.

The Sabbath's origin predates the nation of Israel; God rested on the seventh day at creation and blessed it for humanity in general, long before the Ten Commandments were given at Sinai. Jesus kept the Sabbath as His regular custom and clarified its purpose as a gift for people, not a burden. Nothing in the New Testament records the Sabbath being moved to another day or abolished; instead, it continues to picture rest in God's finished work of creation and, ultimately, in Christ's finished work of redemption, offering a weekly rhythm of trust rather than restless self-reliance.

These themes are best read through the whole testimony of Scripture, emphasizing God's self-revelation in Christ, the active ministry of the Holy Spirit, and the restoration of the whole person. Bible study should lead to a changed life, compassionate service, and a clearer picture of God's loving character.
