Jesus' own words are decisive: "I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil." Matthew 5:17 The word "fulfil" should not automatically be understood as "abolish." Jesus then demonstrated what He meant by expanding and deepening the moral principles of the law. For example: "Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not kill... But I say unto you..." Matthew 5:21-22 He moved from the external act to the condition of the heart. Likewise, He connected adultery with lust and emphasized truthfulness, love, forgiveness, and enemy-love. Jesus fulfilled the law in His life and mission, but He did not teach that God's moral commandments were abolished.
