Faith and Salvation

Can Christians Keep God's Commandments?

Yes, Christians can obey God's commandments through God's transforming grace. Scripture does not teach sinless perfection achieved through human effort, but it does teach that the Holy Spirit enables obedience.

Biblical explanation

God promised: "I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts." Hebrews 8:10 Paul describes the purpose of the gospel as producing obedience: "For the obedience of faith among all nations." Romans 1:5 John writes: "For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments." 1 John 5:3 The Christian life therefore involves both justification and transformation. We are saved by grace through faith, but saving faith produces a changed life. The Bible does not teach that human beings earn salvation by perfect commandment keeping. It does teach that God's Spirit produces obedience in those who belong to Christ.

Key takeaway

Salvation is entirely by grace through faith in Christ. His atoning sacrifice, heavenly ministry, and intercession are the foundation of assurance; obedience, Sabbath faithfulness, and loving service are the fruit of a redeemed life, never a way to purchase acceptance with God.
