Life and Relationships

Why Did God Give the Ten Commandments?

God gave the commandments to reveal His will, define right and wrong, protect human relationships, expose sin, and teach people how to love God and others.

Biblical explanation

Paul says: "By the law is the knowledge of sin." Romans 3:20 The law functions like a moral mirror. It reveals sin, but it does not itself provide the power to save from sin. James compares God's law to a mirror. James 1:23-25. The commandments also protect life, marriage, property, truth, worship, family relationships, and human dignity. God's law is therefore not arbitrary restriction. It reveals the moral character of the God who gave it.

Key takeaway

Discipleship applies the gospel to the whole life: body, mind, relationships, work, finances, and worship. Healthy choices and faithful habits do not earn salvation; they are grateful stewardship of the life God has entrusted to us and practical ways to serve others.
