Biblical explanation
God revealed His name to Moses as "I AM THAT I AM" (Exodus 3:14). This points to God's unique and self-existent nature. He is not dependent upon another being for His existence. Deuteronomy 6:4 declares, "The LORD our God is one LORD." Scripture consistently teaches that there is one true God (Isaiah 45:5-6; 1 Corinthians 8:4-6). The Bible also describes God's character. "God is love" (1 John 4:8). He is holy (Isaiah 6:3), righteous (Psalm 145:17), merciful (Exodus 34:6), faithful (Deuteronomy 7:9), and truthful (Titus 1:2). God is also the Creator. Revelation 4:11 declares that all things exist because He created them. At the same time, Scripture reveals Father, Son, and Holy Spirit in connection with the one God (Matthew 28:19; 2 Corinthians 13:14). Jesus is called God (John 1:1; John 20:28), and the Holy Spirit is described in divine terms (Acts 5:3-4). The greatest revelation of God's character is found in Jesus Christ. Jesus said, "He that hath seen me hath seen the Father" (John 14:9). Scripture gives substantial information about God's character and works, but it does not explain every mystery concerning God's eternal nature. Deuteronomy 29:29 reminds us that some things belong to God and have not been revealed to humanity.
