Biblical explanation
John 1:1 says of the Word, "the Word was God." John 1:14 identifies this Word as the One who "was made flesh." Thomas addressed the resurrected Jesus as "My Lord and my God" (John 20:28), and Jesus did not correct him. Hebrews 1:8 records the Father speaking of the Son: "Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever." Jesus also possesses divine attributes and performs divine works. John 1:3 says creation itself occurred through Him. Colossians 1:16 says all things were created by Him and for Him. Jesus forgave sins (Mark 2:5-12), exercised authority over nature (Mark 4:39-41), and accepted worship (Matthew 14:33; Matthew 28:9,17). At the same time, Jesus prayed to the Father and distinguished Himself from the Father (John 17:1-5). Scripture therefore does not teach that Jesus simply is the Father. Matthew 28:19 places Father, Son, and Holy Spirit together in the one baptismal name.
