Biblical explanation
The Gospels repeatedly describe demons as real spiritual beings. Jesus encountered people possessed by demons and cast them out (Mark 1:23-27; Mark 5:1-20). The New Testament also distinguishes demons from ordinary human sickness. Matthew 8:16 says: "He cast out the spirits with his word, and healed all that were sick." Demons recognize Jesus' identity. In Mark 1:24, a demon calls Him "the Holy One of God." James also says: "Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble." James 2:19, KJV Demons therefore possess knowledge and intelligence, but their knowledge does not produce submission to God. Scripture clearly teaches the existence and activity of demons. It does not give us a detailed classification system describing different ranks or types of demons. Ephesians 6:12 does describe different expressions of spiritual opposition, but we should not build elaborate demonology beyond what Scripture reveals.
