Biblical explanation
The cross is the central event of the gospel. First Corinthians 15:3 summarizes the gospel: "Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures." Isaiah 53 had already predicted that the Messiah would bear human iniquity. The cross demonstrates God's love. Romans 5:8 says Christ died for us while we were still sinners. It also demonstrates God's righteousness. Romans 3:25-26 connects Christ's sacrifice with God's justice and His ability to forgive sinners while remaining righteous. Colossians 2:14-15 describes Christ's victory through the cross, including His triumph over hostile spiritual powers. The cross also opened reconciliation with God. Second Corinthians 5:18-19 says God reconciled us to Himself through Christ. Jesus' final cry, "It is finished" (John 19:30), indicates the completion of the work He had been given to accomplish. However, the cross is not separated from the resurrection and heavenly ministry of Christ. The risen Christ remains our living High Priest and intercessor (Hebrews 7:25; 8:1-2).
