Biblical explanation
The resurrection was predicted beforehand. Jesus repeatedly told His disciples that He would be killed and rise again on the third day (Matthew 16:21; 17:22-23; 20:17-19). After His crucifixion, the women found His tomb empty (Luke 24:1-7). Jesus then appeared to His disciples. The resurrection appearances were not limited to one person. Paul records that Christ appeared to Peter, the Twelve, more than five hundred believers, James, and finally Paul himself (1 Corinthians 15:3-8). Jesus also demonstrated that His resurrected body was real. In Luke 24:39 He told His disciples, "a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have." He invited Thomas to examine His wounds (John 20:24-29). The resurrection is essential to salvation. Paul writes that if Christ has not been raised, Christian faith is futile (1 Corinthians 15:14,17). Because Christ rose, Scripture promises resurrection to those who belong to Him (1 Corinthians 15:20-23).
