Romans 6:23 states, "the wages of sin is death." Scripture does not portray sin as a harmless mistake. Sin separates humanity from God and brings death. God's law is described as holy, just, and good (Romans 7:12). The problem is not God's law but humanity's sinfulness. Jesus came to fulfill the redemptive purpose represented throughout the Scriptures. Isaiah 53 describes the Messiah bearing human iniquity. Hebrews 9:22 explains the connection between sacrifice and forgiveness under the biblical system. Jesus willingly gave His life. He said, "No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself" (John 10:18). The cross also demonstrated God's justice and mercy together. Romans 3:25-26 says God set forth Christ as a propitiation through faith in His blood, demonstrating His righteousness while justifying the believer. The resurrection confirms that Christ's sacrifice accomplished its purpose (Romans 4:25; 1 Corinthians 15:17).
