Matthew says: "And he cast down the pieces of silver in the temple, and departed, and went and hanged himself." Matthew 27:5 Acts says: "And falling headlong, he burst asunder in the midst, and all his bowels gushed out." Acts 1:18 The accounts can be understood as describing different aspects of the same death. Judas had betrayed Jesus for thirty pieces of silver. Matthew 26:14-16. After Jesus was condemned, Judas experienced remorse: "I have sinned in that I have betrayed the innocent blood." Matthew 27:4 He returned the money but did not turn to Christ for forgiveness. Scripture clearly records Judas's betrayal, remorse, death, and replacement among the apostles. It does not give us a complete psychological explanation of Judas's final spiritual condition.
