Revelation 12 gives the clearest description: "There was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels." Revelation 12:7, KJV The dragon is identified as Satan in verse 9. The passage therefore establishes that the conflict was real and involved intelligent heavenly beings. The Bible also describes Satan as one who "abode not in the truth" (John 8:44). His rebellion was not merely a physical conflict. It was fundamentally a conflict over truth, loyalty, authority, and worship. Satan's methods are deception and accusation. Revelation 12:9 calls him the deceiver of the whole world, while verse 10 calls him the accuser. Revelation does not give a complete transcript of the arguments that began the war. It does, however, identify the participants and the outcome: Satan and his angels lost their place in heaven.
