Life and Relationships

Is forgiving God's forgiveness of me different from me forgiving other people?

God's forgiveness is the perfect model and the source of ours, but Scripture ties the two together directly, calling believers to forgive others because they have been forgiven so much themselves.

God's forgiveness is uniquely complete: it cancels a debt no one could ever repay and is offered freely through Christ's sacrifice. Human forgiveness is patterned after that gift rather than equal to it, since people forgiving one another are finite and imperfect, and forgiveness between people does not remove guilt before God the way Christ's atonement does. Even so, Jesus links the two closely, teaching that those who have received God's mercy should extend mercy to others, and warning that an unforgiving spirit reveals a heart that has not truly grasped how much it has been forgiven.

Discipleship applies the gospel to the whole life: body, mind, relationships, work, finances, and worship. Healthy choices and faithful habits do not earn salvation; they are grateful stewardship of the life God has entrusted to us and practical ways to serve others.
