Biblical explanation
God describes Himself as: "The LORD, The LORD God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abundant in goodness and truth." Exodus 34:6 The Old Testament repeatedly emphasizes God's mercy. The destruction narratives must therefore be read alongside passages showing God's patience. For example, God waited hundreds of years before judging the Amorites because: "the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet full." Genesis 15:16 God also repeatedly offered repentance before judgment. Nineveh is an important example. Jonah preached judgment, the people repented, and God showed mercy. Jonah 3:5-10. The Old Testament therefore contains both justice and mercy. The Old Testament does not portray God as enjoying destruction. Judgment is presented as a response to persistent evil, while mercy and repentance remain central themes.
Key takeaway
Discipleship applies the gospel to the whole life: body, mind, relationships, work, finances, and worship. Healthy choices and faithful habits do not earn salvation; they are grateful stewardship of the life God has entrusted to us and practical ways to serve others.
