When the oxen stumbled, Uzzah reached out and touched the Ark: "And the anger of the LORD was kindled against Uzzah; and God smote him there for his error." 2 Samuel 6:7 At first this can appear shocking. But the earlier instructions concerning the Ark are important. The Ark was to be carried by the Levites using poles. Numbers 4:15 specifically warned that they must not touch the holy things. The problem was therefore not merely that Uzzah touched the Ark accidentally. Israel had transported the Ark in a manner contrary to God's instructions. David later recognized the problem: "For because ye did it not at the first, the LORD our God made a breach upon us, for that we sought him not after the due order." 1 Chronicles 15:13 The biblical account presents Uzzah's death as a serious judgment connected with treating God's holiness casually and disregarding His explicit instructions.
