John sees an innumerable multitude “of all nations, and kindreds, and people, and tongues” before God's throne (). Their white robes signify the righteousness and cleansing received through the Lamb, while their palm branches express victory and worship. The elder explains that they have come through great tribulation and have washed their robes in the Lamb's blood (). Their identity is therefore spiritual rather than ethnic or national: they are people redeemed by Christ from throughout the world.
