The question was asked by a jailer who had witnessed God's power when Paul and Silas were miraculously freed from prison. Paul did not tell him to earn salvation through religious works. He directed him to Christ. Yet the jailer's response included action. He listened to the word of God, cared for the apostles, and was baptized (Acts 16:32-34). Peter gave a similar answer on Pentecost. When people asked what they should do, he said: "Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins" (Acts 2:38). Jesus Himself summarized the beginning of His ministry with the call, "Repent ye, and believe the gospel" (Mark 1:15). Therefore, Scripture presents salvation as involving a genuine response to God's grace. We trust Christ rather than ourselves, turn from sin, receive forgiveness, and begin walking with Him.
