Luke explains that he carefully investigated the things he recorded: "Having had perfect understanding of all things from the very first, to write unto thee in order." This demonstrates that biblical writers were not necessarily writing without investigation. Luke specifically describes an orderly investigation of testimony and events. The apostles also emphasized that they were not presenting invented stories. Peter wrote: "We have not followed cunningly devised fables." 2 Peter 1:16, KJV Paul likewise appealed to eyewitness testimony concerning Christ's resurrection: "He was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve." 1 Corinthians 15:5, KJV He then lists additional witnesses, including more than five hundred people (1 Corinthians 15:6). At the same time, Scripture recognizes the need for careful handling of God's Word: "Study to shew thyself approved unto God." 2 Timothy 2:15, KJV The Bible claims truth and accuracy in its inspired message. It does not claim that every translation into another language will reproduce every nuance equally well. Nor does Scripture give us a detailed account of every copying process or manuscript difference throughout history. Therefore, when someone identifies an apparent discrepancy, the proper question is not simply, "Does this look different?" but, "Are these statements actually contradictory when their context, purpose, language, and perspective are understood?"
