Biblical explanation
John wrote so believers could know that they have eternal life: those who believe in the Son of God may have confidence in God's testimony (). Assurance begins with Christ's finished work and God's promise, not with perfection or an emotion that changes from day to day. At the same time, Scripture encourages self-examination (). The evidence of genuine faith is not sinless performance but a changed direction: love for God, love for others, confession when we fall, and a desire to obey Jesus (; ). Believers can therefore hold together two truths: salvation is a gift received by faith, and saving faith produces a new life. When doubt comes, return to the promises of Scripture, confess known sin, ask God for the Spirit's help, and keep your eyes on Jesus rather than measuring yourself by fear.
