Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me" (John 14:6). The way to eternal life therefore begins with Christ. John 3:16 promises eternal life to those who believe in Him. Ephesians 2:8-9 teaches that salvation is by grace through faith rather than works. However, Scripture does not describe heaven as a reward for merely making a verbal profession. Jesus said, "Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven" (Matthew 7:21). The same passage emphasizes doing the Father's will. This does not contradict salvation by grace. Good works are not the price of salvation. They are the fruit of a genuine relationship with Christ. Ephesians 2:10 says believers are created in Christ "unto good works." Jesus also taught that eternal life involves knowing God and Jesus Christ (John 17:3). Ultimately, Scripture's focus is not simply "getting to heaven." God's final purpose is to restore humanity to His presence in a renewed creation (Revelation 21:1-4).
