John 3:16 says God loved "the world" and gave His Son so that whoever believes in Him might have eternal life. Romans 5:8 demonstrates the depth of this love: Christ died for us "while we were yet sinners." God's goodness extends even to those who do not acknowledge Him. Jesus said that God makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good and sends rain on the just and unjust (Matthew 5:45). Jesus also commanded His followers to love their enemies (Matthew 5:44). This command reflects God's own character. At the same time, God's love does not eliminate judgment. God is both merciful and just (Exodus 34:6-7). He calls people to repentance because sin destroys. The cross demonstrates both God's love and His opposition to sin. God does not save people by declaring sin harmless. He provides forgiveness and transformation through Christ. God's love is universal in its offer, but Scripture does not teach universal salvation regardless of human response. God invites everyone to salvation, while people are called to respond in faith and repentance.
