First John 5:14 gives an important principle: "if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us." Jesus repeatedly encouraged His followers to pray. Matthew 7:7 says, "Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find." Yet Scripture also shows that faithful people sometimes prayed for something and did not receive the answer they initially wanted. Paul prayed three times concerning his "thorn in the flesh," but God's answer was, "My grace is sufficient for thee" (2 Corinthians 12:7-9). Jesus Himself prayed in Gethsemane that the cup might pass from Him, yet submitted to the Father's will: "nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done" (Luke 22:42). Prayer therefore is not a mechanism for forcing God to fulfill human desires. It is communication with God and submission to His wisdom.
