First John 1:9 gives a direct promise: "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness." David experienced this personally after his sin with Bathsheba. In Psalm 51 he confessed his sin and pleaded for God's mercy and cleansing. Isaiah 1:18 gives the promise that sins which are like scarlet can become "white as snow." God's forgiveness is based upon His mercy and the sacrifice of Christ. Ephesians 1:7 says, "In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins." Jesus also demonstrated His willingness to forgive sinners. He forgave the paralytic (Mark 2:5), forgave Peter after his denial, and prayed for His executioners (Luke 23:34). Forgiveness does not mean that sin has no consequences. David's experience demonstrates that forgiveness and consequences can coexist (2 Samuel 12:9-14). Nevertheless, God's forgiveness restores the sinner to fellowship with Him.
