The Bible records women such as Deborah leading Israel as a judge and prophet, Phoebe serving as a deacon, Priscilla teaching Apollos alongside her husband, and Joel's promise — quoted at Pentecost — that God's Spirit would fall on sons and daughters alike, enabling both to prophesy. At the same time, Paul's instructions in 1 Corinthians 14 and 1 Timothy 2 about order in worship and the office of elder have been read by some as limiting the ordained pastoral role to men, while others read them as addressing specific local disruptions rather than a universal rule for every context. Galatians 3:28 affirms that in Christ there is no spiritual hierarchy between male and female.
